When every detail seems to come together perfectly—the location, the outfits, the light, and most importantly, the personality. Camden’s senior session in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea was definitely one of those.
A graduate of Salinas High School, Camden wanted senior portraits that celebrated this exciting milestone while still feeling completely like her. We spent the evening exploring some of my favorite corners of Carmel, taking advantage of its beautiful gardens, brick pathways, charming architecture, and that gorgeous golden Central Coast light.
A Vintage Dress With a Special Story
One of my favorite details from Camden’s session was her white dress—not only because it photographed beautifully, but because of the story behind it.
The dress originally belonged to Camden’s mom, making it so much more than simply another senior portrait outfit. Bringing something sentimental into a senior session is such a wonderful way to connect two generations and create photographs that will become even more meaningful with time.
Against Carmel’s brick walls, gardens, fountains, and greenery, the vintage white dress felt timeless. We created everything from classic full-length portraits to soft close-ups, along with a few black-and-white images that really highlight Camden’s expression and beautiful simplicity of the dress.
And when the late-afternoon sunlight began streaming through the trees? Magic.
Celebrating a Salinas High School Graduate
Of course, we couldn't celebrate this milestone without bringing out the purple!
Camden added her Salinas High School graduation gown over the white dress for another set of portraits. I love including cap-and-gown or graduation pieces during senior sessions because they document something that only happens once.
These photographs celebrate the accomplishment, but they still feel relaxed and full of personality—which is exactly what I want senior portraits to be.
A Little Salinas Cowboy Spirit
For her second look, Camden changed into an adorable green-and-white dress and cowboy boots—the perfect way to give a subtle nod to her Salinas High Cowboy pride.
The outfit completely changed the feel of the session.
We wandered through Carmel's gardens, tucked into beautiful little architectural spaces and eventually made our way into town. The cowboy boots were especially fun against the brick pathways and historic textures found throughout Carmel-by-the-Sea.
And then we found a Jeep.
Naturally, we had to use it.
That photograph of Camden behind the wheel with one boot in the air might not be the most traditional senior portrait from the evening, but it may be one of the best examples of why I love senior sessions so much. Senior portraits don't have to be serious from beginning to end. Some of the photographs families end up loving most are the ones that capture a senior laughing, being silly and simply enjoying the experience.
Senior Pictures That Feel Like You
Camden’s session is a perfect example of why I encourage seniors to bring outfits and accessories that tell a story.
A vintage dress from Mom.
A graduation gown celebrating years of hard work.
Cowboy boots representing her high school.
Three completely different looks, but every one of them tells a little piece of Camden's story.
That is what senior portraits should do.
Senior year is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, and your senior pictures should capture more than what you looked like at graduation. They should preserve who you were at this moment—your personality, your style, the things you loved, and the places and people that helped get you here.
Congratulations, Camden, and congratulations to another amazing Salinas High School graduate!
