Camden’s Carmel-by-the-Sea Senior Portraits | Salinas High School Graduate

When every detail seems to come together perfectly—the location, the outfits, the light, and most importantly, the personality. Camden’s senior session in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea was definitely one of those.
A graduate of Salinas High School, Camden wanted senior portraits that celebrated this exciting milestone while still feeling completely like her. We spent the evening exploring some of my favorite corners of Carmel, taking advantage of its beautiful gardens, brick pathways, charming architecture, and that gorgeous golden Central Coast light.

A Vintage Dress With a Special Story

One of my favorite details from Camden’s session was her white dress—not only because it photographed beautifully, but because of the story behind it.

The dress originally belonged to Camden’s mom, making it so much more than simply another senior portrait outfit. Bringing something sentimental into a senior session is such a wonderful way to connect two generations and create photographs that will become even more meaningful with time.

Against Carmel’s brick walls, gardens, fountains, and greenery, the vintage white dress felt timeless. We created everything from classic full-length portraits to soft close-ups, along with a few black-and-white images that really highlight Camden’s expression and beautiful simplicity of the dress.

And when the late-afternoon sunlight began streaming through the trees? Magic.

Celebrating a Salinas High School Graduate

Of course, we couldn't celebrate this milestone without bringing out the purple!

Camden added her Salinas High School graduation gown over the white dress for another set of portraits. I love including cap-and-gown or graduation pieces during senior sessions because they document something that only happens once.

These photographs celebrate the accomplishment, but they still feel relaxed and full of personality—which is exactly what I want senior portraits to be.

A Little Salinas Cowboy Spirit

For her second look, Camden changed into an adorable green-and-white dress and cowboy boots—the perfect way to give a subtle nod to her Salinas High Cowboy pride.

The outfit completely changed the feel of the session.

We wandered through Carmel's gardens, tucked into beautiful little architectural spaces and eventually made our way into town. The cowboy boots were especially fun against the brick pathways and historic textures found throughout Carmel-by-the-Sea.

And then we found a Jeep.

Naturally, we had to use it.

That photograph of Camden behind the wheel with one boot in the air might not be the most traditional senior portrait from the evening, but it may be one of the best examples of why I love senior sessions so much. Senior portraits don't have to be serious from beginning to end. Some of the photographs families end up loving most are the ones that capture a senior laughing, being silly and simply enjoying the experience.

Senior Pictures That Feel Like You

Camden’s session is a perfect example of why I encourage seniors to bring outfits and accessories that tell a story.

A vintage dress from Mom.

A graduation gown celebrating years of hard work.

Cowboy boots representing her high school.

Three completely different looks, but every one of them tells a little piece of Camden's story.

That is what senior portraits should do.

Senior year is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, and your senior pictures should capture more than what you looked like at graduation. They should preserve who you were at this moment—your personality, your style, the things you loved, and the places and people that helped get you here.

Congratulations, Camden, and congratulations to another amazing Salinas High School graduate!

Carmel Valley Senior Portraits | Grant’s Garland Ranch & Asilomar Session

Senior Style Done Right

Top of His Class & Headed to UCLA

There are some senior sessions that feel like the perfect reflection of everything this season is about—celebrating how far you’ve come while looking ahead to everything that’s waiting for you. Grant’s senior portrait session was exactly that.

And he had quite a bit to celebrate.

Grant graduated at the top of his class and was accepted to UCLA—an incredible accomplishment and the beginning of an exciting new chapter. I wanted his senior portraits to capture this moment in his life while still feeling relaxed, natural, and completely like him.

Starting at Garland Ranch in Carmel Valley

We began Grant’s spring senior portrait session at Garland Ranch Regional Park in Carmel Valley, one of my favorite locations for senior photos on the Monterey Peninsula.

Spring at Garland Ranch is gorgeous. Everything is green, the trails are surrounded by trees and foliage, and when the late-afternoon light starts filtering through, the entire landscape seems to glow.

Grant kept his first look simple with a gray polo and neutral pants, which worked perfectly with the natural setting. We wandered through the trails, stopped beneath some of the incredible old trees, and took advantage of the huge fallen logs and beautiful scenery throughout the park.

These are always some of my favorite images to create during a senior session—the ones that don't feel overly posed. Walking down a trail, leaning against a tree, hands in pockets, or simply laughing between shots. They feel natural, relaxed and timeless.

From the Trees to the Coast

For the second half of Grant’s session, we headed to Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove, where we traded Carmel Valley's greenery for rocky coastline, crashing waves and that incredible Central Coast sunset.

This is exactly why I love combining two locations for senior portraits.

Within one session, we went from lush green trails and towering trees to open beaches, rugged rocks and the Pacific Ocean. The two locations couldn't look more different, but together they tell a much bigger story.

And Grant brought an outfit I always love seeing at a senior session—a suit.

Yes, Bring the Suit!

I love when senior guys bring a mix of casual and dressier clothing, and Grant's light suit with a black shirt looked amazing against the coastline.

Senior portraits don't have to be just jeans and a favorite shirt. This is a major milestone, and there is something special about including a more polished look along with the casual outfits that represent everyday life.

Against the boardwalk, rocks and ocean, Grant's suit completely changed the feel of his portraits. Some images became classic and sophisticated, while others still felt relaxed and distinctly California.

Then we switched things up again with shorts, a polo and flip-flops for the final part of the evening. As the sun dropped lower, we photographed along the water, on the rocks and in the dunes, finishing with that warm golden light that makes spring evenings on the Monterey Peninsula so beautiful.

Senior Portraits That Show More Than One Side of You

Grant's gallery is such a great example of why I encourage seniors to bring different outfits and why I love creating sessions with variety.

A senior can be accomplished and laid-back. Polished and casual. Ready for college while still wanting photographs that capture who they are right now.

Your senior portraits don't have to fit into one style.

Bring the suit.

Bring the favorite everyday outfit.

Bring the clothes that feel most like you.

We'll create a gallery that captures all of it.

Congratulations, Grant, on graduating at the top of your class and your acceptance to UCLA. What an incredible way to close one chapter and begin the next.

Samantha’s senior portrait session in Pacific Grove was filled with vibrant color, glowing light, and the effortless beauty of the California coast. Surrounded by the famous magic carpet of purple flowers, her session felt both dreamy and unforgettable.

We began among the stunning coastal blooms, where golden light poured across the landscape and created the most beautiful glow. The coastline was alive with color, offering endless gorgeous backdrops. Samantha proudly wore her University of California, Irvine sweatshirt, celebrating the exciting next chapter ahead. It was such a meaningful way to honor all of the hard work that brought her to this milestone.

For one of her classic looks, Samantha chose a timeless white dress paired with matching shoes—an elegant choice that will never go out of style. Her long chestnut brown hair, styled in soft curls, added a romantic and polished touch that complemented the coastal scenery perfectly. The simplicity of this look allowed her natural beauty to shine in every portrait.

We also captured fun cap and gown portraits along the bluff, with the ocean stretching behind her. These images beautifully marked the significance of graduation while showcasing the breathtaking scenery that makes Pacific Grove so special.

As the evening came to a close, the wind picked up and gave us a bit of a challenge, but it ended up adding so much movement and personality to the final images. Samantha’s lovely pink dress and flowing hair created the carefree, playful look we were hoping for as she walked through the sand at sunset. The breeze, warm light, and peaceful shoreline came together to create the perfect ending to an incredible session.

Partway through the session, the weather had other plans, and we were forced to pause and finish on another day. Thankfully, the wait was more than worth it. Later that week, we met at the beach, where calm waves and warm sunshine gave us the most beautiful coastal backdrop.

For this portion of the session, Angel chose the perfect palette of blues and neutrals, effortlessly complementing the soft tones of the ocean and sky. We also made sure to include his college sweatshirt—a meaningful symbol of the exciting new chapter waiting just ahead.

Lillian’s senior portrait session in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea was nothing short of enchanting. Surrounded by the storybook charm of this coastal village, every corner seemed to offer the perfect backdrop to celebrate such a meaningful season of life.

We began the session with Lillian in a breathtaking floral gown, her long curly hair cascading beautifully around her shoulders. The soft movement of her dress paired perfectly with the romantic setting, creating images that felt timeless and elegant. One of the most memorable parts of the session was incorporating her cello—a beautiful reflection of her artistry and passion. Set against a charming brick courtyard filled with lush greenery, these portraits captured both her grace and the quiet strength she carries.
